voting rights Amendments
What were the Amendments that gave Voting Rights?
15th Amendment - All men over 21 years old can vote. This was the Amendment that allowed not just white men to vote, but also people of color, because we had just abolished slavery and allowed citizenship to all people who were born on American soil.
19th Amendment - All men and women over 21 years old can vote. This Amendment finally allowed women to vote 50 years after all men of color were allowed the privilege.
23rd Amendment - DC gets three Electoral College votes. Before this, DC had no Electoral vote, so DC never had gotten any say on who they wanted to be the president.
24th Amendment - Cannot charge a poll tax to vote. The poll tax had been put in place to stop black people from voting, especially in the South where most white people wanted different people in charge of the government than the black people and the northerners wanted.
26th Amendment - All men and women over 18 years old can vote. Before this, you had to wait until you were 21 in order to vote, but they lowered it because of student protests of the Vietnam war that President L.B. Johnson (who is usually remembered by the chant "Hey, hey, LBJ, how many kids did you kill today?") got us in. Since men are forced to sign up for the draft at 18, and were then forced to enter that war, the student protests came about to lower the voting age so that their voice could be heard.
