Terms and Limits
First of all, what is a term?
A term, for a President and Vice President, is a 4 year long period of time to which they are elected to be in charge of the country.
Why only four years?
We didn't want anyone to be in charge for too long, because we had just broken free of Great Britain and the rule of their King, so we put into place a time limit so that if we don't like them anymore after those four years, we can vote someone else into office.
How many terms can they serve as President?
You can serve two terms, or up to ten years. You can only serve ten years if you were the Vice President, and you were forced to take over for the president after they had completed two years. If they have yet to complete two years and the Vice President takes over, then they won't be able to run for reelection. There are no set term limits for Vice President.
Why can't they serve more than two terms? Obviously, we liked who we were electing.
Because we have the 22nd Amendment which states that a president cannot serve more than two terms, or ten years. At first, it was because George Washington, our first president, only served two terms, and it became a tradition. But during the Great Depression and World War II, we had president Franklin D. Roosevelt, who we continuously reelected for four terms. People did not like that he had staid in office so long, and so they passed the 22nd Amendment.
