The Vice President's Role
What was the Vice President's role back when it was first formed?
John Adams, who was our first Vice President, said that the position of Vice President was, "the most insignificant office that was the invention of man... or his imagination was conceived." The Vice President actually started out as the person who came in second place in the run for President, which meant that the head of one political party was the President, and the head of the opposing political party was the Vice President, which caused many disagreements and issues, especially if the President had to give his power over to the Vice President. Soon enough, the rule changed to where the candidate got to pick their own Vice President. This selection was historically used to balance their ticket, and not really giving much mind that their Vice President might have to take over for them someday.
What role does the Vice President play in our modern Government?
The Vice President seems to hold more power than they used to, considering they do want the Vice President to balance the ticket well, but to also agree with their policies and ideas, especially with the kind of media attention our Presidents and Vice Presidents get these days. The Vice President is also the President of the Senate, and can only cast a vote that will break a tie.
