The impact of Political Parties
What are political parties?
Political parties are used to show what side you usually take on certain issues. Democrats want gay marriage, are more pro-choice, and want generally more taxes. Republicans don't want gay marriage, are pro-life, and want less taxes. (George Washington, our first President warned us not to form political parties, along with the advice to pay off our debt, isolationism, and a few other things we didn't bother to pay attention to.)
What are the functions of political parties?
To show which side you represent when you run for office. If you're a democrat running for a Senate seat, and you're in a Democratic state, then you have a higher chance of winning than a Republican would.
How do we get our Presidential candidates out of these parties?
We hold the Presidential Primaries, or Caucuses, which gradually narrow down the number of candidates for each party until we have one person representing the political party as a whole.
What is Presidential nomination?
Presidential nomination is when you, or someone else, says that you are running for the office of President.
What is straight ticket voting?
Straight ticket voting is when you vote only for the people of your favored political party. It doesn't matter to you want good or bad they've done, just that they are in the same party as you, and you vote solely for that reason.
What is split ticket voting?
When you vote for more than just one political party.
